6/14 -- we read the Torah portion. We had the children take turns reading chapter 12 of Numbers and asked them questions. Then we dismissed them and us ladies read chapters 8-11 taking turns and discussing. How about that part where the cravers or lusters of the meat were the ones to die before they could even swallow a bite. Also how about that Moses always taking a question asked him by an Israelite to G-D first to get an answer rather than spouting off his own. And how about that not complaining about whom G-D has chosen to be in charge. And Moses didn't even have to defend himself, G-D spoke for him...too cool! And G-D saying to HIS prophets HE speaks in dreams and visions ((some translations also have riddles)) but with Moses HE speaks mouth to mouth -- how cool!
6/15 -- Our Intro to Jewish Roots class took a break from our study of the book of Jacob ((james because king james wanted his name in the Bible)) to discuss Shavuot. The civil calendar had it down as 6/9 & 6/10 but the scripture does say
Numbers 23:15
And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete:
some say the sabbath mentioned here is the first day of unleavened bread but the saduceans, whom us who grew up in furch were taught that they were sad because they did not believe in the resurrection, they didn't have firstfruits and the counting of the omer start until HavDalah ((aka the start of the first day of the week)) that occurs after the Sabbath that comes after the first day of unleavened bread. Plus we've always been taught that Yeshua arose on the first day of the week ... right which would actually start in the evening the night before because that's the order of days in Genesis. Isn't that just like our Messiah to even use a group who doesn't believe in resurrections calendar to prove it does exist and to perform it when they'd be observing firstfruits?!!
Numbers 23:11
And he shall wave the sheaf before the L-RD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
I really am very thankful that I found this Intro to Jewish Roots class. I'm learning so much and making " in real life" friends.
Shavuot - pentecost
Pentecost is normally considered the birth of the chrischun furch, but historically and Biblically it is the beginning of Messianic Judaism, as the followers of Yeshua became the leaders of this new sect of Judaism called "Ha Derekh, The Way," as they were known to the Jewish community around them. There were no non-Jews saved for approximately 10 to 20 years later as we see in Acts 10 at the household of Cornelius. What a surprise that non-Jews could experience the same thing as the Jews.

Now for some class comments on the above table:
our instructor has told us he grew up in a methodist church and his wife grew up catholic. When they married he attended church with her. After a while they got saved in the catholic church and started reading their Bible at home on their own time and when they'd go to mass and listen to the priest they realized that some of the things he said were wrong so they left to find a new church. At the new church on the very first day his wife said she was writing a prayer down asking if this is where the L-RD wants them at and before she could finish the prayer someone up front stood up with a message in tongues and the interpretation and the L-RD said not to be afraid that HE had them on the path HE wanted them to take. ((now for you that want to bash me over what I just typed, remember not my words and this instructor's wife has never been angry over her catholic upbringing and totally views it as just the path G-D wanted her to take, alright so no bashing))
Others in class agreed there was a time and place for messages in tongues with the interpretation. We talked about the correct usage of tongues:
I Corinthians 14:2-4
2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
and that we should remember it's not our gift. It belongs to the Holy Spirit and the Spirit will decide who uses it and when. Which the Pastor of the Home Church I attended also always reminded us that the gifts of the Spirit belong to the Spirit and to those whom they are given but just because you do something one time, like have a vision, don't set up a 900# and call yourself a prophet.
ok continuing on with the handout:
In the economy of G-D, a new or newer covenant does not nullify a previous covenant but ratifies it, adds strength and detail. The New Covenant (Brit H'Kadashah) is actually Covenant Renewal of the Sinai Covenant. If G-D would nullified previous covenants that HE had established, HE would no longer be the G-D that does not change and thereby profane HIS own name. All Biblical blood covenants made by G-D are with Abraham and his descendants Israel. HE has not made any covenants with non-Jews (goyim - the nations), but non-Jewish believers enter into covenant with G-D by entering into HIS covenants established with Israel through the Messiah Yeshua.
Ephesians 2:11-13
11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
ok back to comments:
someone mentioned that Abraham was the first convert and don't forget at the time of the circumcision and Mt Sinai both were a mixed multitude. Like we've said over and over when you have Yeshua and you're adopted into the family of G-D, you become part of the Bride that is Israel.
then there was discussion on Torah or "the law" as chrischuns refer to the thing they say they are saved from having grace so no need to observe. Someone said Grace has a couple of definitions and the word it comes from does not always mean unmerited favor.
Freedom or grace is found only within the boundaries of Torah. For example we have traffic laws and as long as you follow them you are free to drive wherever you please, but if you drive recklessly and do your own thing because you say you are free to do so, you will get caught and face penalties.
Also the word testament is a bad way to divide the Bible ... last will and testament is upon death.... how about referring to them as Covenant and Renewed Covenant from now on.
Stay in your Bible and be willing to pause and discern and test against Scripture what your pastor or ss teacher says.
