Trees for our Nature Journal

Date: Monday, October 30, 2006 which is Year Zero

Combining it because the trees project requires all 4 seasons so it will be easy to spread it out over 2 "school" years.

We have got our 6 trees that are local in our area. (2 block radius) We plan to get actual photos of the trees in each season, make a map showing where they are on our walk we took to find them from our home, find stories/poems about them, possibly make up our own, get bark samples and if possible finished samples, already pressed our leaves (well I got to get the hackberry again because it blew out of my hand on the way home...), already identified our leaves, and also trace the history of how these types of trees ended up here if they weren't native to begin with. Oh and date the day the leaves "started turning", the day they finally fall completely off, the day the first bud appears, and the day it is in full summer shade.

Hackberry we have some of it's fruit also
Autumn Flame Red Maple
Silver Maple
Osage-Orange or better known as hedge apples around here...had a little bro once and after playing with these things, he had a snot green forhead for a few days LOL
Redbud so happy to have found a spring flowering tree
Sweetgum even have one of its spiky "fruits"
And plan to find our state's tree.
That's a start anyhow.

TODAY: we took pictures, and boy a week sure makes a difference...most of the leaves have fallen off the trees. I also found what I think is an oak leaf but am waiting for it to dry before looking it up...and I saw some vine thing that had what looked like sprouts on it...like the sprouts you get at the store for salads/sandwiches.

Anyone know what the plant I saw might be? thanks.
