Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit was here since Feb. and I just got a chance to see it.
It started with a 7 minute glimpse of the DVD on it -which referenced something about a million years ago - I lost it at that point and so based on that I was no longer as "geeked" about seeing it.
found it interesting that a shepherd by the name of muhammad found the cave with the clay jars that held some of the first scrolls found.
They talked of the Qumron area and thought it was the Essenes who they said were Manasseh, Ephraim and Judah. That they believed they were the 1st Christians, that they wanted to remain seperate from the "defilement" that was taking place in Jerusalem. That they held to the verse in Isaiah about one calling from the wilderness to make way for the Lord - referring to John the Baptist -and I think the exhibit said something about him having hailed from that area.
These Essenes started counting their days from the 4th day as the first- the day the luminaries were created- they also used a calendar of 364 days based on the sun...and thought those in Jerusalem erred by using a lunar based calendar.
They had a timeline on the wall that was interesting. On the bottom you see all the things commonly taught about history of that time...but on the top they showed all the biblical times that should be in our "textbooks" but ya know that wouldn't be "PC" to do so.
I noticed the timeline area for Christ birth showed 3 kings named Herod and Herod the great they said reigned ended in 4 BC where as Herod Agrippa(?) reign started 4 BC...so I wondered more about which Herod tried to kill Christ as an infant/toddler (?)....
They had on display a KJV from 1604 and said it is referred to as the "He" version because they translate Ruth as he and not she...LOL - --- but what I found of interest was the book of maccabees(?) was included in the KJV of 1604??? any ideas
They also had the gutenburg on display - have no idea what language that was.
And the Geneva had pictures in it - it look liked a dictionary.
They quoted some things I know I have read in the book of Daniel as being apocrypha...?
the movie and also the display of the copper scroll talks of a great treasure...I piped up during the movie about knowing what treasure they are referencing...and told the people around me all about the segment that you can watch in the 2.5 hour Spring Feast Part II ....it's in there somewhere...watch it and be wowed.
I do remember on the Psalm scroll reading the words.
O Give thanks to the LORD, for HE is good, for HIS steadfast love endures for ever.
It was equal to Psalm 136:1-9 but they used love instead of Mercy as KJV says - so I wonder which decade of english was being used to translate? I see the ESV uses the word steadfast in that passage.
Another thought I had was they said someone must have hidden them to protect them from falling into the wrong hands...but I wonder if some of evil found them and wanted to hide them, so the people wouldn't know the truth...
also things there that caught my curiosity were a book of Josephus's writings and mentione of something called War Rule and Community Rule.
