Let's Discuss

Earlier today as I was walking 40 minutes on the treadmill, I heard an interview with a guy named Tony Blankeley and he was talking about what great idea mandatory universal service (aka national civilian defense corp) would be. That all newly graduated 18 year olds should serve 2 years in the military and that the smartest/fittest would be sent overseas during that time while the not so smart/fit and criminal records ones stayed to serve here

I had a few thoughts/comments (and maybe you do too)

What about the Amish who live here and don't do as we "englischers" do. Do they have to subject their young adults as well. If not, then wouldn't many "convert" in order to spare their children?

Also why not send the criminals to fight in a war and "scare 'em straight"? Or else won't many teens default to committing crimes to avoid being sent (maybe even have parents encourage that?)

One caller swears that military involvement enforces patriotism and American values.

My question is why would I want my son to hang onto guilt trip laden so called holidays that are nothing more than glorified shopping trips with money you don't have to buy someone something they don't want or even need.

Then on the show they stated that in march of 2008 bill ayers got top spot on board of those who write textbooks for the public schools and the liberal agenda is to make kids hate the USA... and of course follow along blindly to what ever they in office tell them to do...

prayers still appreciated as lay-off ville may soon turn into no job ville and we've both been applying for work but no one has called even for interviews.

Wow, are you still limited in your internet access? I'll be praying for your family!

Yeh, I'm not so thrilled with the universal service idea.

Huh. From what I understand, Israel has mandatory service for all males....and it seems to work for them. Not sure it would work here, though......

I am in favor of people serving in the military, but not sure about the mandatory part. I'm kinda biased, though - I did 4 years of JROTC, and my husband is an ex-Marine.
