Yesterday around 3:30pm I heard screaming coming from the backyard. I ran out to see what was wrong. DS and his 14 year old friend were playing too close to a german shepherd on a leash on an apartment patio door(poor thing has been tied up like that since he was a puppy, that's animal cruelty really it is)
The dog got a hold of DS's leg and tore it open badly. So we were ambulanced to Children's Mercy ER and didn't get home until 9:30pm. Thankfully the wound was mostly just torn fat/skin but was still intact just a very jagged opening for the surgeon to sew. The surgeon looked at it and said the nurses in the ER could sew it up and then left. About 30 minutes later she came back to tell us she cleared the rest of her schedule and she would sew him up herself. My boy is a charmer even in pain and barely talking.
I've got the after stitches photo not uploaded to the pc yet and my Mother-in-Law took a photo of the before stitches, again not on the pc so I can't show it at this time. I'll post when I get them uploaded.
DS has to take it easy for at least 10 days so we might skip a lot of normal activities even baseball practice/games. Then again my husband wonders if he should play baseball after the stitches are out taking a risk of sliding - which I vehemently declare is absolutely not necessary unless you're about to be tagged at home base and you actually think you can make it in.
Before the ambulance arrived and through his tears all DS could ask was if he'd still be able to play baseball. And he's only had 2 practices and one game.
We would appreciate prayers for a speedy, pain-free, complication/infection free recovery. It hurts to see my baby hurting.
Animal control took the dog but we have to call them and the police to file a report. This dog has already attacked a small dog and another kid we were told....again owners fault to leave the dog tied up like that. We don't blame the dog. Although my husband would shoot the dog himself if he could. But that's just a normal fatherly response.
My husband is also going to talk to the apartment complex because most of those places have 25 pound pet limits and this dog was clearly over the limit.
Thanks for praying

Oh, dear! Prayers for you and your son!
Will pray with you. My oldest when through a simular situation. It can be scary, but he sounds like a tough kid!
So sorry to hear about that. My son always enjoyed sports too and was the same way when an injury occurred. But what a frightening experience! I know you are so relieved it wasn't any worse. Praying for a speedy recovery! Take care!
Oh, what a horrible experience! We will keep him in prayer for a speedy and painless recovery...he's young so the young ones always heal up much faster.
Blessings

My youngest has been bitten 3 times, twice by German Sheperds. The first one took his whole face when he was two years old. It was horrible, but like your son, he was a charmer even when injured. I really don't have good feelings about Sheperds...
My youngest also broke his leg one year and smashed his foot the next. He was relegated to the couch both times and it was incredibly upsetting for him to have to be still. He did learn how to be quite the accomplished hopper. Everyone would comment, "Boy! I've never seen someone hop like that..." LOL I was successful in keeping him couch bound for two days once, that was our record.
All this to say that I can relate to your fear, concern and to the "bummer" of having to take it easy and miss a bit of baseball. My son would say he could relate too, but I'd have to slow him down to tell him the story. :) I hope your son isn't afraid of dogs after his experience, I wish mine were a little more fearful of dogs. What inadequate dog owners, and to think that the dog had been taking out his frustrations on others before this yet they didn't bother to do anything...
I'm rambling. See where my son gets it? ;) I'll pray for your boy, for his healing and that no infection would set in. Baruch HaShem that he wasn't injured more seriously!!
Saying prayers for your DS!
Many Blessings :)
