DH called me a few minutes ago as I was on my way home from working out on the treadclimber to tell me he taught DS how to tie his shoes. DS recently started wearing shoes with laces because most of his shoes before had velcro straps...but the chiropractor said one arch is starting to fall and lace up shoes would be better. He has been wearing them since 7/5 and he had the first part of tying down, it was the loops part that was hard to grasp. So he would do the first part and I would do the last...in hopes that enough exposure to seeing it done would help him figure it out.
So when DH told me that he only had to show him 2 times and DS picked it up, I first of all lavished hubby with compliments and then an idea for a post struck me.
Ya see I am the one - Praise Yeshua- who is with DS a majority of the time. So I get to be the example and teacher...but there is still plenty of big ticket items that DH and other family members can boast they took a part in.
Birth - Age 1 DS learned: 7/31/01 - 7/30/2002
sitting, sleeping thru the night, clapping, crawling, smiling, face/voice recognition, etc....all those things that babies pick up from good, hands on parents.
Age 1- Age 2 DS learned: 7/31/2002 - 7/30/2003
walking, running, playing ball, climbing, jumping, imagitive play, block building, cup holding, silverware usage, talking, sing Jesus Loves Me (this I Noah, as he says to this day...LOL) and other things yet again good, hands on parenting will teach a child.
Age 2-3 DS Learned: 7/31/2003 - 7/30/2004
more finely tuned motor skills, to recognize colors, finally worked up the courage to play at McD's playland (and now we can't get him to leave, so funny since he used to be scared of it)...more talking and singing and playing....so still more hands on, good parenting.
Age 3-4 DS Learned 7/31/2004-7/30/2005
to peddle a tricycle, which my dad taught him this skill, write the number 4 and recognize it, not to be afraid of the pool, thanks to a fellow 3 year old who had a swimsuit with floaties built in and who was jumping in the pool, so DS decided he too would like to wear his swimsuit like that
Age 4-5 DS learned: 7/31/2005-7/30/2006
how to dog paddle, My sister taught him this on his 4th b-day at his swim party, to recognize numbers 0-9, my mom taught him this with a cell phone and teaching him important phone numbers - like hers, my work #, and his dad's cell#- , DH taught him to spell his name using the keyboard, to write his name, thanks goes to Aunt Pam on this one, and DS invited Jesus into his heart in December of 2005 because we went to a wake and he asked me a ton of questions on the body being there but not the soul/spirit...and I also got to teach him letter sounds.
Age 5-6 DS has learnt: 7/31/2006 - 7/30/2005
to tie his shoes as of today, again thanks goes to DH!!, to ride a bike this past spring, again thanks goes to DH for this, and I got the privilege of working with him on his arithmetic and phonics and handwriting skills. And this summer he has learnt to swim without needing a flotation device-thanks to MIL for persistence with that.
SO see sure, I got to be there for the majority of things and by daily chipping away at it those things were picked up, but other key family members also were able to play a part in DS's acquired skills.
SO Happy Birthday to DS and a BIG Thank You to the Family for being a positive in DS's life...I know many children are not as blessed as DS is.
