In my last post, I was concerned with what I could feed baby #2 should momma milk dry up.
I started researching formula options when he was 4 weeks old because of all the plugged ducts and not being sure it would be wise to continue exclusively pumping.
I read foodbabe's article on how even the "organic" infant formulas are not all created equal and her summary is that Baby's Only is the least offensive one. I didn't like that it is based off cow's milk, has soybean oil, is iron fortified, and uses brown rice syrup as the carb source. 1 & 2
Why cow's milk based? I personally think it is because of the dairy farmers making money on it...after all we are told to not give baby cow milk until 1 yr or older but the formula can be based on it? And never forget the fda does not care about your health (read an ingredient label lately?) nor the health of your baby. Furthermore, many articles can be found that cow milk protein is more allergenic than another, better mammal. 3, 4, & 5
Not a fan of using algae derived dha and ara - when first son was on formula those ingredients weren't all the rage...it was later that they were added to "be even more like breastmilk"....but then babies started having digestive problems...(source section 3 of foodbabe's article)
Here are the commercially available formulas that I thought about and spent many hours reading the ingredient labels on:
~Baby's Only (liked nonGMO and one is free of the dha/ara; did not like added iron, soybean oil, and brown rice syrup) UpDaTe: sometime after I posted this, Baby's Only did come out with a formula sweetened only with WHEY so when DS#2 turned 1, and like his older brother was unable to go straight to cow milk, I did supplement his diet with this as a gentle approach to introducing cow dairy milk.
~Similac PM 60/40 (liked that it was low iron and free of the dha/ara hysteria; did not like unknown ingredient source and soy oil)
~Gerber (liked the probiotics and more whey to casein ratios; did not like unknown ingredient source, added iron, corn based sweetener, soy and palm oil, and algae derived dha/ara source)
~Newcomer Honest Co. (liked that it is organic and option to not have dha/ara added; did not like glucose solids, palm and soy oil, fake vitamin k added, and added iron) And would never consider their dha supplement because it uses unclean fish sources. http://biblehub.com/leviticus/11-9.htm
There is still a possible commercially available formula that I am eagerly awaiting to read their label, but they are having a hard time getting that 'we don't really care about you anyway's fda approval...

I am very interested in Nanny Care brand --- but can only get the toddler formula as again thanks to those who don't really care about our health anyway, can not get a hold of the infant formula.
My husbands family is sold on using goat milk for infants and beyond. That right there is first hand experience and positive outcome and his aunt is a chiropractor and her step son is a pediatrician.
After all this research and even reading many homemade formula recipes, I decided that goat milk would be what I would give baby #2 should momma dry up or for any other reason that exclusively pumping long term would not be doable.
Here are the many recipes I read:

I read that it would be more proper to dilute the goat milk to 1/3 and when all ingredients are plugged into myfitnesspal, the macros for the protein content in 8oz is 3 grams just like breastmilk. So until 7 months of age, I am sticking with 1/3 goat milk before bumping to 1/2 as to not tax baby kidneys.
Here is my favorite recipe http://www.mtcapra.com/homemade-goat-milk-formula-2-0/
I added the whey and kosher gelatin and would use either nutristart infant multi or kid e mins when we switch to this full time (currently this is baby#2's first food instead of baby cereal which is not good for babies).
oh and Barianni brand olive oil should be in the above photo but I forgot to get it for the photo session...
